A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
